Educators honored with McSwain Team Teaching Awards
Feb. 27—The lobby of W.B. Wicker Elementary School was crowded with educators and guests from around Lee County last Wednesday as the Lee County Education Foundation, The Ruby and Ernest McSwain Worthy Lands Trust and the Lee County Schools held a celebration to honor recipients of the 2022-23 McSwain Team Teacher Awards.
More than two dozen Lee County Schools teachers who were part of the teams whose students showed exceptional growth during the school year were honored. The honors also came with a cash award for each teacher.
"This is a ceremony where we get to honor the best of the best and that's what is in this room tonight," Lee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Chris Dossenbach said. "These are some of the best teachers that we have in this district."
Founding member Dennis Wicker addressed the group briefly.
"It's always a delight to celebrate this occasion because it's an occasion of success," he said. "The success has been where you have distinguished yourselves among your peers, but more importantly, you've had an impact on the lives of the children. There's nothing more important and nothing more noble than teaching and educating our children. I hope that you are so proud of yourselves. I know your students are."
Wicker said that on behalf of the communities the teachers serve and the organizations involved, he was delivering thanks to all of the teachers present.
"Keep pushing these kids," he said. "They are our future."
Susan Keller, chair of the Lee County Education Foundation spoke about the awards and the recipients.
"You are the best of the best," she said.
Keller also said that part of the award was to encourage the teachers to share their knowledge with what they did to accomplish the goals. "You can help everyone else in the county," she said.
