Edmonton loses QB Matt Nichols to injury in second half of CFL East semifinal

TORONTO - Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Matt Nichols was carted off the field with a leg injury Sunday after being sacked during the third quarter of the CFL East Division semifinal against the Toronto Argonauts.

Nichols came on in relief of Kerry Joseph to open the second half and led the Esks to a field goal that cut the deficit to 31-10. But he was hurt on Edmonton's second possession when his leg twisted awkwardly while he was being pulled down.

He left on a cart, his left leg immobilized. Eskimos players surrounded him as doctors worked on the 25-year-old quarterback.

It was the second injury blow for Edmonton, which lost star linebacker J.C. Sherritt prior to the game. A nagging ankle injury saw Sherritt watch from the sidelines in a walking boot.
