Eddie Redmayne voices prehistoric caveman in ‘Early Man’ trailer
Continuing the stop-motion success of Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and Shaun the Sheep, Eddie Redmayne now leads a prehistoric tribe as a caveman in the first teaser trailer for Early Man.
Directed by Nick Park, the film sees the star of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them delivering a virtually unrecognizable vocal performance as Dug, a courageous caveman who unites his clan against the villainous Lord Nooth (voiced by Tom Hiddleston). The footage teases the style of humor that’s marked films from Aardman, the Bristol-based animation house, and shows Dug on the hunt for some grub with his bestie Hognob.
In addition to the trailer, Aardman announced additional voice casting for Dug’s tribe. Richard Ayoade will voice Treebor, “a gentle giant scared of his own shadow”; Selena Griffiths will voice “Treebor’s no nonsense mother,” Magma; Mark Williams will voice Barry, “whose best friend is a rock”; and Timothy Spall will voice Chief Bobnar, the “long-suffering leader” and “father figure to his tribe of idiotic brutes.”
Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams was previously announced for the cast, voicing the character Goona. Production continues in Bristol ahead of a release next year.

Redmayne called Early Man “Aardman’s biggest adventure yet” in a special video message to the fans. “I hope you have as much fun watching this as I did voicing my character, Dug.

Early Man will open in U.K. theaters on Jan. 26, 2018.
