There’s something special about Eddie Redmayne. Whether it’s his magical appearance at Comic-Con (literally, he brought magic wands), the fact that he loves Harry Potter as much as we do, or his sense of humor about parenting… he just always seems like such a sweet, down-to-earth guy.

So naturally, we can’t wait to see him as magizoologist Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (November 18th, come quickly please!), in part because Redmayne got to be quite involved in the creative process of choosing props for his character.

Of course we’re talking about his wand.

Redmayne was given the freedom to help design his wand for Fantastic Beasts!

According to Entertainment Weekly, Redmayne assumed that the wand would simply be plopped into his hands, however that is not what went down. “[But] the reality is that these amazing props designers come, and then you have really a quite intricate discussion with [director] David Yates about what qualities Newt has.”

To make this decision, Redmayne thought a lot about the style of wand that Newt would want. “He’s not a showy guy, Newt, so I wanted it be to quite simple. So we decided to have the wand be made out of ashwood, and it has quite a few scratches and sort of burn marks — so that you could get the sense that he’s been traveling the world with it, and it’s got quite a history to it.”

And the discussion didn’t end there, they literally got right down to every detail. “But for the handle, they were sort of talking about whether it should be horn or leather, and I didn’t like the idea of like animal products being used, given that he’s a zoologist.”

Awwwww. More reason to love Eddie Redmayne. “So in the end, they came up with this idea of sand shell… and it has a slightly mother-of-pearly feel.”

As you can guess, Redmayne couldn’t contain his excitement. “My inner 9-year-old was having a disco, and then I was actually presented with it!”

This guy.
