Eddie Lacy could be a free agent target for the Philadelphia Eagles

With the wide receiver position being the most talked about positional group for the Philadelphia Eagles, very few have turned their attention to that of running back. With Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathews leading the way, Philly’s running game struggled to make much of an impact, at least on a consistent basis that is.

Likely to release Ryan Mathews this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles are likely to be in search of a new starter for next season. While Darren Sproles presents a solid receiving option out of the backfield, he is not the every down runner that this team needs. With greater needs for the first round of the draft, the Eagles could be convinced to pursue a running back in free agency.

One player that fits the bill of the Eagles needs is current Packers running back Eddie Lacy. Suffering a season-ending ankle injury earlier this season, Lacy’s value could be in Philly’s price range should they make the right roster cuts this offseason. Given that he is a strong downhill runner, Lacy is the perfect fit thanks to his poor receiving skills.

Possessing a running back like Lacy gives a team that strong, goal line threat that every team craves. However, already having Darren Sproles, Lacy’s arrival would not cut into Sproles role with the team. Using Lacy as your every down runner, the Eagles could easily involve both players on a consistent basis next season.

The other area a player like Lacy would help in is the development of quarterback Carson Wentz. Part of the issues for Wentz this past season was the lack of a consistent run game. With many teams knowing that Philly needed to pass, little respect was paid to the run game. Though Philly was able to burn a few teams like this, it was never consistent enough to be a true threat.

Given Lacy’s injury problems in the past, his value could be lower than expected this offseason. If the Eagles get the chance to land Lacy on say a two-to-three year deal on the cheap, the team should take the risk. Getting him on a short deal would limit the risk while giving the team a shot a very high reward.
