Ed Sheeran will star in the biggest film of 2016

From the small screen to the big screen! Ed Sheeran will play a cameo role in one of the major comedies of 2016 – Bridget Jones's Baby.

The Thinking Out Loud singer announced the news on Instagram and shared a cheeky selfie with Renée Zellweger, who will reprise her role as the hugely popular and unlucky-in-love Bridget.

While Ed appeared as himself in Home and Away earlier this year, it sounds like the crooner is stepping out of his comfort zone and is trying his hand at acting for a blockbuster.

"Spent the day being an actor in the new Bridget Jones movie," Ed captioned his photo. "Loved it, you're gonna love it too."

The third instalment of the much-loved Bridget Jones franchise is not based on Helen Fielding's latest novel Mad About the Boy but instead will be centred around columns that the author wrote eight years ago.

The storyline will follow Bridget as she juggles being a 50-something journalist working at Sit Up Britain, and being a mother to two young children.

It has been 11 years since Bridget was last on our screens and it seems she has adapted with the times and updated her famous diary for a shiny red iPad. In a photo released by Universal Pictures, 46-year-old Renée looks youthful and angelic wearing a cosy cream jumper and staring warmly into the camera.

Joining the American star is Colin Firth, who will return to screens as Mark Darcy, while Hugh Grant has confirmed he will not be taking part because he did not like the script.

But it seems there is a new man on the scene for Bridget. In September former Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey confirmed that he will be in the film.

He wrote on Instagram: "Nice to be working in England. Renee and Colin are an absolute joy to work with! A good couple of days rehearsing at Pinewood Studios. I really like it here!"
