Community members talk about what is needed in new EBR Schools superintendent

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Adam Smith was named interim superintendent after Sito Narcisse resigned in January.

However, the superintendent position still needs to be filled.

The School Board President said a qualified candidate will be selected by July 23rd. Before that happens community members addressed qualities they would like to see in the next superintendent.

The search continues for the next superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

A group of parents, educators, staff, and students voiced their concerns at a community meeting. Several spoke on the issues schools are facing and the qualities they are looking for in whoever fills the position.

“We need EBR working for EBR. Put the money back into EBR,” said Patty Merrick, a former educator.

Another educator questioned the district’s performance in recruitment and retention.

It is an ongoing topic but with the help of board members and EBR citizens, finding a qualified superintendent shouldn’t be hard, according to this teacher.

“We can go ahead and support Adam Smith,” Craig Bilbrew, EBR Teacher said.

EBR Schools wants feedback from community, students in search for new superintendent

EBR Parent Tonja McMillian said the school district needs to be more understanding of students’ needs.

“There is no reason why any child in this district should be at an under-resourced school. When our district as a whole has the resources,” McMillian said.

McMillian’s son, an EBR student, questioned his safety when going to school. An issue Kiley hopes the next superintendent will address.

“I go to Baton Rouge FLAME. I want to talk about safety. A kid at my school got knocked out…he got hit in the head with a brick,” McMillian’s son said.

Applications for EBR superintendent will open next week up until June 15th.

More meetings are to follow this week.
