Thomas Tuchel will not be axed as Bayern Munich coach if they are eliminated in the Champions League last 16 by Italy's Lazio later on Tuesday, board member for sport Max Eberl has said.

Asked by Amazon Prime shortly before the kick-off in Germany whether Tuchel would stay in such a scenario, Eberl said: "Yes, there is no other opinion at the moment."

Bayern announced last month that Tuchel will leave after the season despite an original contract until 2025.

Bayern have to make up a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Rome to advance in the elite event which offers their most realistic chance to avoid a first season without silverware since 2012.

They trail leaders Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points in the Bundesliga with 10 games left, and have been eliminated in the German Cup. They have just victory from their last five matches in all competitions in an inconsistent season.
