There’s some good news for people who like spicy food today, because a new study indicates that chili peppers are not only delicious, but that eating them could actually help people live longer.

According to Medical XPress, a new study shows that eating hot peppers is associated with a longer lifespan and a reduced risk of death due to heart disease or stroke.

The study looked at 16,000 American men of various ages, races, dietary habits, education levels, and smoking patterns, for 23 years, and looked at whether or not they ate chili peppers or spicy food. The study, published in Plos One, suggests that the people who eat chili peppers live longer than those who don’t.

How exactly chili peppers are related to lower mortality is still a question, though. Researchers theorize that the chemical capsaicin, which makes peppers taste spicy, is responsible because it increases blood flow and is also linked to reduced risk of obesity. The research is still ongoing, but in the meantime, check out some of our best chili pepper recipes for some good to eat more of them.
