Eating A Portion Of Beans Every Day ‘Makes You Lose Weight’

It turns out that beans aren’t just, ‘good for your heart’, as the famous playground rhyme has it - they’re good for weight loss, too.

In fact, eating a portion of beans, peas, chickpeas or lentils every day leads to weight loss.

Researchers found that people who ate 130g of pulses every day lost half a pound over six weeks, compared with people who didn’t - based on a review of 21 clinical trials involving 940 people.

Dr Russell de Souza of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital, found that eating beans and other pulses makes people feel fuller.

Dr de Souza says, ‘There is room for most of us to incorporate dietary pulses in our diet and realize potential weight management benefits.’

‘Though the weight loss was small, our findings suggest that simply including pulses in your diet may help you lose weight, and we think more importantly, prevent you from gaining it back after you lose it.

‘This new study fits well with our previous work, which found that pulses increased the feeling of fullness by 31 per cent, which may indeed result in less food intake.’
