Easter Traditions and their continuing importance

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — We all can recognize some of the key aspects of Easter.

The painted eggs, baby bunnies and chicks, the spring flowers. These are all traditional Easter symbols.

St. Stephen’s parishioner Lorie Midkiff said that her family rotates traditions depending on the year.

“Usually we do one of two things. If we’re in town, we do come to an Easter church service, because it’s always nice to be back with your church family. Other times we travel abroad. So we kind of have two traditions,” said Midkiff.

Midkiff said that she and her sister spent last Easter touring Amsterdam and taking a river cruise of the Netherlands, where their family is originally from.

Why is Easter never on the same Sunday?

So, all families have some sort of tradition whether it be for Easter or not. Why are these traditions so important?

The Reverend Dr. Susan Claytor said it all comes back to familiarity.

“It feels the same. The traditions are being carried on, it gives them a sense of peace, it gives them a sense of trust and faith that all will go on. That it’s as it used to be and it will be in the future. So I think that the roots that traditions bring to us is so powerful,” said Claytor.

Whether it’s attending a service, or spending time connecting with your family, traditions can bring a sense of foundation and peace that nothing else quite can.
