BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — According to the National Retail federation, families are expecting to spend an average of $177 per person for this holiday.

With lots of families living paycheck to paycheck in Kern, Blessing Corner Ministries might be the only reason some will have fond memories of this holiday.

A love for Jesus Christ and a calling to aid Bakersfield: that is what brought Bonnie Turner and her husband here long ago. With a celebration of every holiday, Blessing Corner Ministries is making core memories for children.

If it wasn’t for their work, chances are– those children would have to go without. You won’t leave without a full stomach.

“We normally do ham, but this year we’re taking it a notch up. We are doing meatballs, Swedish meatballs with macaroni and cheese for the kids, mashed potatoes for the adults and glazed carrots for everyone,” Bonnie Turner of Blessing Corner Ministries said.

With inflation and other monthly costs– some families cannot afford the extra money that it takes to celebrate as they’re focused on the necessities.

“We’ve got about 18 students at our facility right now packing Easter Baskets. Easter Baskets that are even better than the ones that you buy in the store. In addition to what everything else the kids will be participating in. It’s a feeling that’s beyond explanation, if that makes sense. Because you know that you’re doing it for families that wouldn’t otherwise have what we’re going to be sharing presented to them,” Turner said.

All presented in the name of their greater calling.

“When it comes to these families, they come to us with problems. And when they do, we’re there. If it calls for prayer, we pray for them. If it calls for just a listening ear, we’ll listen to them,” Turner added.

The festivities all kick off Easter Sunday at Blessing Corner Ministries located at 101 Union Ave. beginning at 11 a.m.
