Easter eggs...and bacon? Where to find extravagant baskets, unusual candy near Brockton

BROCKTON — Easter Sunday is fast approaching, which means chocolate bunnies, cream-filled eggs and jelly beans will be flying off the shelves to help fill up Easter baskets with delectable homemade treats.

Gowell's Home Made Candy in Brockton offers much more than traditional milk chocolate Easter bunnies and Easter eggs. For something different, try their Caramello eggs, an egg-shaped, fluffy marshmallow that envelops a "gooey" caramel layer before being delicately coated in either luscious milk or rich dark chocolate.

Hilliards Chocolates in Easton offers extravagant Easter baskets and other classic and unique Easter treats. For something quirky and memorable you can try their fool the eye "bacon and eggs" candy, which started as an April Fool's joke but quickly became an Easter morning tradition.

Sally's Sweet Shoppe in Weymouth offers old-fashioned chocolate bunnies and eggs and more, including cookies and cream bunnies and homemade peeps.

Gowell's Home Made Candy has "all the candy you need" to fill your Easter basket, according to owner Lori Gowell. Some of the favorite Easter goodies include solid chocolate bunnies and miniature Easter bunnies crafted in milk, dark and white chocolate, she said.

Other lucious treats include half-dipped M&M bunnies (fluffy marshmallow bunnies "dressed to impress" in either milk or dark chocolate outfits), "sweet" little chocolate bunnies with elongated ears., Caramello eggs, cream-filled eggs, and solid chocolate bunnies and eggs adorned with vibrant spring-colored foil wrapping, according to its website. Gowell's also has malted milk eggs, jelly beans, peanut butter bunnies and bunny face pops, and fluffy marshmallow bunnies that are an "absolute must-have" for every Easter basket.

Celebrating 100 years, family-operated Hilliards Chocolates offers unique and classic Easter treats and baskets, including chocolate bunnies, cream-filled eggs, dessert-sized lemon lavender truffles and their signature bacon and eggs. Other Easter specialties include chocolate bunnies and eggs wrapped in colorful foil, marshmallow bunnies, peppermint bunny bark, Easter decorated peppermint creams, jelly beans and more, according to its website.

Bacon and Eggs have been a Hilliards tradition since the 1950s, according to its website: "This unique candy started as an April Fool's joke but quickly became an Easter morning tradition because the two dates are usually close in time."

The eggs are made of "melt-in-your mouth" peppermint and the bacon strips are made of "sweet chewy coconut," the website states.

Skinners offers customers handmade-chocolates made fresh at the Union Street candy store.

"The store is ready to go for Easter," owner Paul Daley said.

Easter goodies include solid chocolate bunnies in milk, dark or white chocolate, and chocolate Easter eggs filled with peanut butter, coconut cream or butter cream covered in milk chocolate, he said.

Skinners also has special foiled-wrapped Easter bunnies and Easter eggs, milk chocolate Easter bunny pops, and lots of bags of Jelly Belly jelly beans in special colors for Easter. Premade Easter baskets will be available closer to Easter, Daly said.

Owner Sally Perine said their most popular item is their homemade peeps in yellow, pink and purple colors. Their Easter baskets are filled with "wicked fun stuff," she said. Perine said to visit the store early for the "best selection of all Easter candy."
