EastEnders wins another top soap award - beating two other shows

EastEnders has continued its recent winning streak, taking another major award.

The BBC soap has received a number of big accolades in the past year, including at the Digital Spy Reader Awards, the Inside Soap Awards and the NTAs.

The series has now won the Soap and Continuing Drama prize at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards last night (March 26), beating fellow BBC shows Casualty and Waterloo Road.

The judges said EastEnders “showcased absorbing storytelling with highly emotional content and beautifully nuanced performances”.

EastEnders has broadcast a number of big storylines over the past year, including the death of Lola Pearce-Brown after battling a terminal brain tumour, as well as The Six mystery storyline that came to a head with a big death reveal over Christmas.

The show also recently earned a BAFTA TV nomination ahead of this year's awards ceremony in May.

In other EastEnders news, the soap recently announced the exit of Ben Mitchell, with star Max Bowden breaking his silence this week over his upcoming departure.

"Well guys, it's that time! It's been one hell of a ride! Thanks for taking Ben to your hearts and allowing my version into your lives," he said on Instagram.

"I had an amazing five years at @bbceastenders and learnt a hell of a lot about myself and the craft I love so dearly; it got me through some very hard personal times and I will be forever grateful!"

Bowden added: "I really will never be able to thank everybody for the support enough, because the fans of the show are so passionate, caring and invested, it enables us as actors to want to keep going and always be better; so I really do from the bottom of my heart appreciate every single person who has sent any sort of positivity my way over the last five years - I love you all."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
