East County residents notified about sexually violent predator placement

CAMPO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Sheriff’s deputies and the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force went door-to-door Wednesday in rural East County to notify residents about a sexually violent predator (SVP) who will be living in their community.

Alan Earl James, a 61-year-old registered sex offender, was convicted for several counts of molesting and kidnapping children back in 1981 and 1985.

Alan Earl James, a 61-year-old registered sex offender, was convicted for several counts of molesting and kidnapping children back in 1981 and 1985.

He was released into the community this year under the Conditional Release Program and has a lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender, the Sheriff’s department said in a release Thursday.

Law enforcement agencies warn the community about sex offenders living or frequenting their area under California Penal Code Section 290, also known as “Megan’s Law.”

The purpose of going door-to-door in Campo Wednesday, the release said, was not to induce fear, but rather to keep the community informed.

However, some Campo residents have voiced their concerns in the past about releasing James into their community.

James served several years in state prison before being admitted to Coalinga State Hospital in 2007 for treatment as a sexually violent predator.

After completing his program, he is set to be placed at a home on Custer Road under 24-hour supervision. He is not wanted by the Sheriff’s department at this time.
