Major earthquake rattles Dodger Stadium and NBA Summer League

The cities of Los Angeles and Las Vegas are more than 250 miles apart. The sports world still felt a reported 7.1 magnitude earthquake in both cities on Friday.

Visual confirmation of the earthquake in Southern California was quite ready for anyone watching the Los Angeles Dodgers game, as the camera was clearly shaking for the duration of the event.

Not appearing to notice the earthquake, the players still played on.

Those at Dodger Stadium could reportedly see the foul poles shaking, among other things.

Out in Las Vegas, the NBA was starting up Summer League action, highlighted by the debut of Zion Williamson on Friday.

Unlike the Dodgers game, ESPN’s marquee New York Knicks and New Orleans Pelicans actually halted play. That was probably the smart move, given that the game is played under a multi-ton jumbotron that was slowly swaying.

“To feel the earth beneath your feet move, to see a scoreboard of that size directly above our heads swaying in our direction,” ESPN analyst Doris Burke said, via Awful Announcing. “It was one of the scariest moments of my life. I don’t know how to describe it.”

The Knicks-Pelicans game was eventually announced as finished. Also cancelled were a Denver Nuggets-Phoenix Suns game scheduled in the same arena and a San Antonio Spurs-Orlando Magic game being played nearby, while a WNBA game between the Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics was postponed at halftime.

Per Rod Boone of The Athletic, the issue is serious enough that NBA commissioner Adam Silver wants a structural engineer to examine the Summer League arenas for damage before proceeding with future games.
