Early voting information for Lansing Charter Commission elections

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Voters in the capital city will choose between three dozen candidates for a new town charter commission on May 7.

The charter is comparable to a town constitution, a founding document on which a lot of local government is based.

The last time Lansing changed its charter was in 1978, and after nearly 50 years the city is a lot different, and officials say it’s time for an updated charter to reflect that.

Commission members that win these elections will help draft a new charter that will lay out some of the most important rules for how the city is going to run.

any solution they come up with will eventually need approval from voters— but choosing the people involved with the draft is a crucial first step.

Election day is on Tuesday, but Lansing will be offering some early voting opportunities for people who want to get it done this weekend. Early Voting is also a good opportunity for voters who want to make sure they have time to officially register.

Lansing voters may vote early at the Reo Elections Office, 1221 Reo Rd, on:

• Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

• Sunday, May 5 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
