Early voter numbers down in Arkansas, many hope for bigger turnout on Super Tuesday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Monday was the last day for early voting in Arkansas, and officials said the numbers were extremely low in comparison to other presidential primary years.

While early voter numbers are dramatically down in 2024, many are hopeful that voters will pack the polls on Super Tuesday.

“I think that the voting is going to pick up tomorrow,” voter Minnie Tellman said.

Campaigners are hopeful that people will show up beyond the poor numbers during early voting.

“It may be a little low compared to other times, but I think it’s going to be okay,” Tellman said.

In 2016, there were more than 170,000 early voters in Arkansas. That number was down during the next primary season in 2020 by 18,000, and this year it’s down by 20,000.

State Board of Election Commissioners Director Chris Madison said the number of voters coming out to vote comes down to what races are on the ballot.

“It’s really just a matter of what contested races you have that really drives the voter turnout,” Madison said.

Madison said the lack of local races may have kept people from getting to the polls, but every number counts, especially on election day.

“There will be a lot more polls open tomorrow, and a lot more poll workers,” Madison said.
