Early 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Reactions Say the Twists are Shocking
The newest Star Wars movie might divide the fanbase. Early reactions to The Last Jedi indicate the movie is more shocking than fans will expect and “a lot to process.”
Critics haven’t released any reviews yet, but those who attended the red carpet premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Saturday night in Los Angeles are tweeting their spoiler-free reactions to the film. Overall, these reactions are mostly positive, but the vast majority warn that certain storylines and character arcs might not be what fans want.
The overall early sentiment from those who have seen The Last Jedi can be summed up in two words: shocking and emotional. Though the movie is being compared to The Empire Strikes Back, this is mostly a reference to the tone, not to the plot.
Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican had probably the most to say, and without revealing anything, noted the movie is very surprising saying the plot “sneaks up on you in ways you will not expect. I’ve never seen apparent plot holes wielded as surprise attacks.”
BEWARE of spoilers. #TheLastJedi sneaks up on you in ways you will not expect. I've never seen apparent plot holes wielded as surprise attacks.

Breznican also noted that he is “still processing” the film, a sentiment shared by several others at the screenings.
It’s AMAZING. Just amazing. Have a lot to process, but WOW. #lastjedi

Longtime journalist Germain Lussier also implied the movie is going to be a game-changer with fans.
I can’t believe The Last Jedi exists. @rianjohnson is a madman and I love him for it. He takes Star Wars to the edge and throws it over. What a crazy, awesome movie. We’ll be talking about this one for a long, long time.

The sentiment that it will be a movie that causes a lot of fan debate was echoed by several others at the screening, too. “Historian Gonzales” also said that one prequel-era character is mentioned and that the movie will “spark more debate than *The Force Awakens.”
#TheLastJedi is going to spark much more debate amongst fandom than TFA. It's good! But there's a bit more fat than we're used to in non-prequel Star Wars films.

Seriously though, everybody — including Peter Sciretta, editor of Slashfilm — are telling fans to stay away from spoilers.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is so very different, exciting, surprising. So many emotions, so many amazing moments. Stay away from spoilers.

But mostly, all the journalists and other directors — including the excellent Ava DuVernay — were just praising the general greatness of the film.
"Do. Or do not. There is no try." Bravo, @RianJohnson. You did that! The last 40 minutes had me on the edge of my seat in every moment. Superb storytelling. Exceptional design. I laughed. I cheered. A total joy-ride through the galaxy. So fun. #StarWars pic.twitter.com/u4h4XsdzZA

#StarWars: The Last Jedi is so beautifully human, populist, funny, and surprising. I cried when one POC heroine got her moment because films like these leave their mark on entire generations -- and representation matters
