DWTS’ Mark Ballas and BC Jean: All About Their Epic First Dance

Mark Ballas and BC Jean set out with all intentions of having a normal, run-of-the-mill first dance at their Nov. 25 wedding.

“At first we thought we’d just stand there and sway to our song,” the Dancing with the Stars pro, 30, says in the current issue of PEOPLE.

But swaying to Coldplay’s “Magic” just wasn’t going to cut it for Ballas, who currently stars as Frankie Valli in Broadway’s Jersey Boys.

“I ended up putting something together,” says the dancer, who ultimately choreographed a “very understated and romantic” Argentine tango, which he taught his Alexander Jean bandmate (née Brittany Jean Carlson).

For more from Mark Ballas and BC Jean’s wedding — including all about their epic first dance and wedding cake — pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. Special video of the couple’s journey to the altar is now streaming on People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN). Go to PEOPLE.com/PEN, or download the app for Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Xumo, Chromecast, Xfinity, iOS and Android devices.

After starting off with their scheduled sway, Ballas, 30, and Jean, 29, surprised their 160 guests, which included many DWTS alums, with their routine set to “1977” by Ana Tijoux.

“No pressure, right?” jokes Jean, who is a novice dancer. “What the hell was I thinking?!”

But Ballas thinks his new bride did just fine.

“No one had ever seen BC move like that,” he says. “But she crushed it.”
