Dustin McNally, of Grand Forks, announces candidacy for District 42 Senate seat

Mar. 26—GRAND FORKS — Dustin McNally has announced his candidacy for the District 42 Senate seat.

McNally is a faculty member and assistant dean for student success in the College of Engineering and Mines at UND. McNally is running as a Republican and said in his announcement that his extensive background in energy, education and leadership would provide a unique perspective in the state Senate in Bismarck and that he would be committed to fiscal conservatism while promoting investment into the state.

"By promoting responsible spending along with strategic investments, we can foster economic growth, expand our workforce and capitalize on opportunities, such as the emerging hydrogen economy, that can directly benefit our district," McNally said in the release.

Earlier in March, UND's Energy and Environment Research Center received

$4.2 million for the research

of hydrogen cell technology. The EERC is also part of a federal initiative to develop

better sources of clean energy

McNally is an Eagle Scout, engineer and fifth-generation North Dakotan. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from UND and a bachelor's in international studies from UND. He also studied at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, where he studied hydrogen safety technology during his post-graduate work.

District 42 generally includes far western Grand Forks, on the west side of I-29, along with a strip of land that reaches to Grand Forks Air Force Base. It also includes a thumb-like area that juts eastward into Grand Forks, between DeMers Avenue and Gateway Drive.
