Durham pitcher hit by liner could get out of ICU today

Three days after being struck in the face by a line drive, Durham Bulls pitcher Tyler Zombro has made enough progress that he could be transferred out of the intensive care unit today.
“Still progressing. We’re happy where he’s at,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said this morning after Rays trainer Joe Benge received a text update. “There could be some movement getting out of ICU and going elsewhere today or tomorrow. So still fingers crossed, but good signs.”
Zombro, 26, had just entered the game as a reliever in the eighth inning when a screaming line drive struck him in the head. Zombro fell face first to the mound and was eventually removed on a stretcher and taken to Duke University Hospital.
Cash said on Saturday that Zombro had been able to get out of bed and walk with some assistance.
Thursday night’s game was suspended after the incident and Friday’s game was also postponed. Durham returned to the field against Norfolk on Saturday night and four Bulls pitchers combined for a 4-0 shutout victory.
