Dungeons and Dragons kits coming to Washington libraries for role-playing fun

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Ever wonder what it’d be like to be a wizard? A monk? A barbarian? If you spend some time in a Washington library this year, you can find out.

Dungeons & Dragons kits are coming to the state’s library system through a partnership between the Secretary of State’s Office and Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. The organization announced Thursday that the first of 75 kits will be delivered on March 21.

“I have always valued libraries as places of learning and community enrichment,” Secretary Hobbs said. “Dungeons & Dragons is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to come together in a role-playing setting to strategize and build relationships.”

D&D recently saw a recent resurgence in popular culture after the ‘80s-inspired show Stranger Things, and garnered even more popularity after the recent Paramount Pictures movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It’s a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that allows its players to create a world in which they explore, embark on quests, and interact with other players.

“The library is a place where anyone can learn, explore, and connect,” said Yakima Valley Libraries Community Library Supervisor Rebekah Sopher. “D&D allows people to express their creativity, connect with people of diverse backgrounds, and improve their social and critical thinking skills, all while going on adventures and fighting dragons.”

The kits will include a D&D Starter Set, character sheets, demo adventures, organizer instructions, and Dungeon Master guides. The rest of the tools necessary to play are available for free on the role-playing game’s website.

“D&D has been inspiring imaginations and friendships for 50 years,” Dan Rawson, the Wizards of the Coast’s head of D&D, said. “We’re excited to support D&D play everywhere and hope this donation inspires more adventurers to join the party.”
