Duke Energy unveils plan for clean energy plant near Lake Norman

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Duke Energy has filed an application and unveiled plans with the state of North Carolina to build a new natural gas plant in Catawba County as part of its carbon plan execution, according to documents obtained by Queen City News.

The application was filed last week with the State of North Carolina Utilities Commission in Raleigh and the facility would be constructed at the current coal-fired Marshall Stream Station near Lake Norman with a target completion date of 2029.

Duke stated in its paperwork that the new facility is part of”crucial components to the companies’ least cost energy transition strategy to reliably add new generation to the companies’ combined systems while enabling the orderly retirement of aging, coal-fired generating facilities.”

Under the current proposal, Duke said two wind turbines will construct and operate a pair of advanced-class simple-cycle gas combustion turbine units that will improve electricity adequacy and reliability.

Duke has previously stated its goal is to have carbon neutrality by 2050. Details surrounding the cost of the new facility have not been released.
