Duke Energy Foundation fists $6,450 to Cass County EMA

May 10—The Cass County Emergency Management Agency will be receiving $6,450 from the Duke Energy Foundation to support training for area public safety responders in the area of lithium ion battery response as well as response to other hazardous materials and energy storage related incidents.

Expanding on training conducted last year, Cass County will host lithium ion battery technician training June 21-22. This technician level training builds on operations level response training conducted last year and is also supported by the Local Emergency Planning Committee. Responders will see lithium ion batteries undergoing failure and receive hands on training of how to mitigate the situation, and also how to safely package damaged batteries for transport and disposal.

The training will include responding to small incidents such as battery packs, electric vehicles, and also larger incidents such as fixed sites such as industrial Energy Storage Solutions that utilize lithium ion technology for energy storage. Those interested in registering for the course or who would like more information can email EMA@co.cass.in.us or call the Cass County Emergency Management Agency at 574-722-2484.

"Cass County Emergency Management Agency extends its sincerest appreciation to Duke Energy for their third year of consecutive support for public safety related training programs in Cass County and the surrounding communities," a press release from the EMA's Rocky Buffum said. "Support from community partners helps to keep responders safer when responding to emerging technologies and high hazard situations, and also reduces loss of live and property for the citizens Cass County public safety agencies so proudly serve."
