The Duchess of Cambridge is to make a solo trip to Luxembourg this year, to join the commemoration of the Treaty of London.

The Duchess, who last year visited the Netherlands on her first overseas engagement without her husband, will travel to Luxembourg on a one-day tour on May 11.

It is the next stage in what has been dubbed the Royals "Brexit tour" of Europe, which will see them visit Paris, Romania, Italy, Austria, Germany and Poland in the first half of the year.

A spokesman for Kensington Palace said: "The Duchess of Cambridge will visit Luxembourg on the 11th of May and will attend the commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London which confirmed Luxembourg’s independence and neutrality.

"This visit is at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office."

The Duchess, along with the Duke, visited Paris earlier this month in what was seen by many as a show of "soft power" even as Britain begins to extricate itself from the European Union.

Called a "charm offensive" by the French press, it saw them undertake a number of engagements to meet politicians and launch a programme celebrating the two nations as "neighbours".

In a speech there, the Duke said: " This deep friendship between the United Kingdom and France, forged in sweat and blood, is one that will endure.

"This partnership will continue despite Britain's recent decision to leave the European Union. The depth of our friendship and the breadth of our cooperation will not change."
