Drug deal likely sparked Centreville shooting that left 1 dead, 1 hospitalized

CENTREVILLE, Va. - Authorities in Fairfax County say a shooting in the parking lot of a shopping plaza in Centreville was likely sparked by a drug deal gone wrong.

Fairfax County Police Captain Kent Bailey said the shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 14600 block of Route 29 near O’Day Drive.

Officers responded and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body, Bailey said. One of the men died at the scene. The other was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries Bailey described as life-threatening.

Bailey said a possible illegal narcotics transaction gone wrong led to the shooting. He said two firearms police believe belonged to the two men were found at the scene.

"All individuals involved in this shooting are accounted for. There is no threat to our community," Bailey said during a press briefing.

Police are expected to remain in the area throughout the day as the investigation continues.
