Driving tips for rainy days in the Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Wet weather can cause dangerous road conditions for travelers in the Las Vegas valley. Nevada Highway Patrol responded to more than 25 calls before noon Friday.

Enrique Garcia drives for Commerce Auto Towing and said rainy days can be busy for him.

“A lot of cars leak oil and leak coolant. When it rains, it makes the road slippery,” Garcia explained.

His advice for drivers? To slow down and be patient.

The company’s manager Roxy Galstyan agreed.

“People panic, they drive fast, and don’t pay attention,” she observed.

Galstyan projected they would have upwards of 15 service calls before the day was over.

Commerce Auto Towing is contracted with Nevada Highway Patrol, and safety is key when responding on the freeway.

“When we are on the freeway, loading the car, move over because we’re in a situation where we are trying to open the road right away,” Garcia explained.

To avoid issues on the road, the Nevada Department of Transportation has a few driving tips.

Staff recommended drivers slow down, keep an extra following distance, and don’t slam on their breaks. It could help avoid needing a tow yourself.

Another resource is the free NDOT freeway service patrol which helps with minor auto repairs on their regular route.

When a crash happens, NDOT will direct traffic for safety and cleanup.

They are the busiest during the summer and help about 15 cars a day with the heat.
