Drivers ignore signs, pass by large sinkhole on Denver street

DENVER (KDVR) — A sinkhole in the middle of a busy Denver street has drivers worried and the city taking action.

The deep hole on 46th Avenue near Dahlia Street is big enough to fit a grocery cart inside. But it is not visible from a block away, surprising those who first discovered the break in the road.

“I was like, wow, that is a big sinkhole,” said Demry West, whose friend had taken pictures of the hole.

The city has blocked off the area with large signs that warn the road is closed, yet the Problem Solvers saw several cars, trucks and scooters pass behind the signs to take a shortcut through the area.

“If I wasn’t paying attention, I’d probably be in the hospital right now,” one scooter rider said.

Many found a detour to get around the area safely.

“Knowing there’s a sinkhole there, it could be pretty dangerous. They can mess up your car,” one driver said.

Another unstable area is marked with a brightly colored traffic cone behind the road closure. FOX31 saw a significant depression in the pavement about 50 feet from the sinkhole.

The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure told FOX31 that crews are inspecting the area and working with Denver Water to ensure a thorough investigation of the infrastructure.
