Drivers facing over hour delays on the George Washington Bridge due to police activity

Drivers are facing over one-hour delays on the George Washington Bridge Wednesday morning due to heavy traffic volume and police activity.

At 6 a.m. Wednesday morning the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey posted on its X account, alerting commuters of bus schedule changes, bus station closings and to expect significant delays on and around the George Washington Bridge.

"Due to police activity around the George Washington Bridge, the northwalk and the GWB bus station are closed at this time. Buses are picking up and dropping off on Ft. Washington between 178th street and 179th street ... In addition, during the morning rush hour at all Hudson River crossings, customers should expect the possibility of significant delays. We strongly encourage commuters to allow for extra travel time and consider using public transportation," said the posts on X.

As of 10 a.m. the George Washington Bridge bus station was reopened running normal service of bus pickups and drop-offs. The northwalk remains closed.

What is happening on the George Washington Bridge?

According to a statement from a Port Authority spokesperson, they are currently working with the New York Police Department to monitor potential protest activity "designed to impact operations at the Hudson River crossings."

"We have deployed safety and security measures to help ensure uninterrupted operations," said the spokesperson.

Per the George Washington Bridge's official X account, as of about 8 a.m. both the George Washington Bridge upper and lower levels to New York are seeing delays of 75 minutes. Updates will continue to be posted on X as the situation progresses.
