Driver strikes, kills 5-year-old boy who ran out onto Queens street

A driver struck and killed a young boy after he ran onto a Queens street Saturday evening, cops said.

The 5-year-old boy ran into the roadway on 124th St. near 21st Ave. near Poppenhusen Playground in College Point at about 6:00 p.m., cops said, based on their preliminary investigation. A 25-year-old woman driving south on 124th St. in a 2008 Honda CR-V then collided with the boy.

“When this one car was coming, she was kind of coming slow and fast at the same time and this kid just crossed the street and we heard ‘pop’,” a young girl, who was playing on a nearby sidewalk, told the News. “We went to go check and then we saw a little kid under the car. We screamed out, ‘Whose kid is this?!'”

The young witness said she watched as medics put the boy on a stretcher and checked for his pulse.

Medics rushed the boy, who suffered head injuries, to NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi where he later died, cops said.

It was unclear who was with the child before he ran out onto the street. The boy’s mother later arrived at the scene and worriedly asked police, “‘Where’s my kid? Is he okay?'”, the witness said.

The driver stayed at the scene and was seen crying while two people consoled her on Saturday evening.

“The woman was devastated,” the young witness said of the driver.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday night.
