Driver slams into utility pole, Bloomingdale sign board and flagpole

Bloomingdale police arrested a Butler man after they said he drove his car into a utility pole before striking the municipal building's digital signboard and knocking down the flagpole on Thursday, closing a portion of the road for several hours.

At 3:21 p.m., members of the police department responded to the report of a single car accident at the municipal building, arresting Richard Brannigan, 37, Sgt. Daniel Fletcher said in a police report.

Brannigan is believed to have lost control of his car while traveling west on Hamburg Turnpike, crossing the eastbound lane before he hit and broke a utility pole, police said. His car continued forward, hitting the digital signboard and knocking over the flagpole before coming to a stop.

Borough employees and Officer Vincent Graziosa and detectives Daniel Greenwood and Steven Smith approached Brannigan, who appeared to be uninjured, Fletcher said. Paramedics came to the scene and brought Brannigan to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

A school bus sustained some damage after it was struck by the wires downed by the accident. No students were on the bus and the driver was not injured.

Brannigan faces charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to keep right, failure to inspect his motor vehicle and a number of motor vehicle summonses. He was released to a family member.'

A toxicology report later showed he was not intoxicated, but did have the presence of Xanax in his system.

Hamburg Turnpike, from Star Lake Road to Elizabeth Street, was closed until midnight.
