Driver killed, 4 injured, arrest made in suspected drunk-driving crash in Arden Arcade

One man was killed, four people were injured — including a motorist who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence — following a crash Saturday evening in Arden Arcade.

The wreck happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Fulton Avenue between Marconi Avenue and Elvyra Way, according to the California Highway Patrol and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer Justin Fetterly said a Dodge truck, traveling south on Fulton, was launched onto the curb after being struck from behind by a Toyota SUV that investigators say was speeding. The SUV then crossed into northbound lanes and collided head-on with a Volkswagen SUV carrying a woman and infant before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, identified as a man in his 50s, was killed and emergency crews had to keep the truck from falling into the Chicken Ranch Slough canal to rescue a passenger from the truck, authorities said. The passenger was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The Volkswagen driver, who suffered cuts, and her baby were also checked out at a hospital, according to firefighters and Fetterly.

The driver of the Toyota SUV, also a man in his 50s, was hospitalized for minor injuries before he was expected to be booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, Fetterly said.
