Driver identified in fatal crash on North Academy

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The driver in a fatal single-car crash and fire near the North Academy Boulevard and Vickers Drive intersection has been identified, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 58-year-old Anthony J. Gordon, on March 4, 2024.

CSPD said Gordon’s car had allegedly been speeding southbound on Academy and failed to navigate a curve. The car crossed into the northbound lanes and hit the curb on the east side of the road, where it rolled and caught on fire.

When emergency responders arrived and put out the fire, they found Gordon dead inside. Speed is considered a factor in the crash, CSPD said.

This is the 13th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2024. At the same time in 2023, there had been 11 fatalities.
