Driver dead, passenger hospitalized after Augusta crash

One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a crash Thursday morning on Twiggs Street in Augusta.

Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the intersection of Twiggs Street and Laney Walker Boulevard just before 5:30 a.m. for a wreck with injuries, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The car was traveling west on the 1200 block of Twiggs Street "at a high rate of speed" and ran off the road, hitting a tree, according to a news release from the Richmond County Coroner's Office.

When deputies arrived, they found one car with two people inside, according to the release. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to Wellstar MCG by EMS. Authorities did not immediately identify the deceased.

The intersection was temporarily closed while the Richmond County STAR Team and the coroner's office were at the scene, but it has since reopened.
