Driver dead after crash into power pole causes outage for over 40 SRP customers

One driver is dead after he collided with a Mesa power line on Friday morning, causing power outages for over 40 residents.

Around 5:30 a.m., a northbound driver on Stapley Drive past Brown Road veered off the road, collided with a power pole and a nearby bus stop, and finally came to a stop after hitting the block wall of a residential backyard, according to Mesa Det. Richard Encinas.

The driver was removed from the vehicle and rendered aid from first responders and members of the community, and was transported to the hospital where he later died, according to Encinas.

The pole the driver collided with was owned by Salt River Project. Since 5:39 a.m., it had caused power outages for 42 customers in the area.

SRP said power was estimated to be turned back on by 1:40 p.m.

Stapley Road remained closed in both directions between McKellips and Brown Roads as crews worked to fix the damage.

Det. Encinas said it was unknown what caused the crash as the incident remained under investigation.
