Driver critically injured when SUV crashes into building in Sulphur Springs

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Ind. — The driver of a sport utility vehicle was critically injured Thursday when he crashed into a building in Sulphur Springs.

According to the Henry County Sheriff's Department, the crash was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. at 102 W. Main St. in Sulphur Springs, about 10 miles south of Muncie.

Deputies reported the SUV had "completely gone through the east wall (of the building) as well as damaging the west wall."

The driver of the SUV — whose name was not revealed in a news release — was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie and was later transferred by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis medical facility.

The owner of the property was inside the building when the crash took place but escaped injury, police said.

In the wake of the crash, a portion of the building was demolished "to ensure public safety," the release stated.

Main Street — which carries U.S. 36 through Sulphur Springs — was closed for several hours.

The crash is being investigated by Indiana State Police.
