Driver crashes car into popular Paso Robles restaurant

A car smashed through the front of Thomas Hill Organics in Paso Robles Tuesday morning, ending up almost entirely inside the restaurant surrounded by a broken door frame and piles of bricks.

Paso Robles Battalion Chief Brian Lewis told The Tribune that the driver of a Mercedes crashed into the restaurant’s wine bar at around 10:45 a.m. No one else was in the vehicle, and no one was injured.

The driver was stuck inside his vehicle and had to crawl to the passenger side to exit with the help of firefighters, Lewis said. The driver refused medical attention and did not seem under the influence.

Lewis said it’s unclear whether the driver had a medical emergency, confused the gas pedal with the brake or thought they were in reverse, but said it did appear the driver’s intention was to leave the area at the time of the crash.

The driver was released from the scene without police involvement, Lewis said.

Firefighters were at the scene for approximately two hours, Lewis said.
