Driver charged in Asheville wreck that killed 2 teens including Myers Park HS student

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The driver involved in a serious single-vehicle crash in Asheville that killed two and injured three others has been charged, Highway Patrol confirmed.

The driver, identified as William Tyson Neumann, 18, of Augusta, Georgia, has been arrested and charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and one count of reckless driving.

The deadly accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, along Interstate 40. Troopers said Neumann was driving a 2015 Volvo car on I-40 when he tried to take Exit 53-B for US Highway 74 and Interstate 240 while driving too fast.

The vehicle lost control, ran off to the left side of the road, and struck a tree.

On Sunday, April 7, Myers Park High School confirmed that Sophie Gordon, 16, a junior at the school, passed away following the crash in Asheville Saturday night. Highway Patrol confirmed rear passenger Robert Fox, 19, of Wilmette, Illinois, also died in the weekend accident.

Three other passengers, Hunter Sanford, 18, of Pineville, NC, Isabella Tarantelli, 18, of Charlotte, NC, and Aby Robinson, 17, of Charlotte, NC, were all injured in the crash, troopers said.

NC State Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation shows speed was a factor in the wreck.

Neumann was booked into the Buncombe County jail on Monday, April 8. His bond was set at $25,000. His next court date is scheduled for May 7.
