Driver Beaten Up By Crowd After Striking 10-Year-Old

A driver who hit a boy with his car was beaten up by a crowd of people after getting out to check on the child. On Thursday afternoon, 10-year-old David Harris was struck by a pickup truck driven by Steve Utash when the child stepped off a curb into the street. Utash got out to check on Harris, at which point a group of men attacked Utash, injuring him significantly and robbing him. The incident took place on Detroit’s east side.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Harris has abrasions on his knee, a swollen lip, and problems with one of his feet, although he is expected to recover. Utash, on the other hand, was knocked unconscious and remains in critical condition. At a press conference, police Sgt. Michael Woody said of the situation, “it’s really not looking all that good.”

The police believe, from preliminary investigation, that Utash was not at fault for the accident. Eyewitness reports put the number of attackers anywhere between six and 12. Utash apparently tried to fight against the crowd before dropping to the ground when overwhelmed.
