Drive-thru Narcan distribution event held in Tunkhannock

TUNKHANNOCK, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A community that wants to make change is taking action to try and lessen the number of overdose deaths. It held an overdose-reversal drug distribution event on Sunday.

The Wyoming County District Attorney says the goal of this distribution is to educate people and to save lives.

More than 100 boxes of Narcan were handed out to people at Lazybrook Park in Tunkhannock.

The Wyoming County District Attorney’s office partnered with local organizations to help combat opioid-related overdoses.

“It is free, it is anonymous. We’re doing it on purpose as a drive-through so that people don’t have to stop, don’t have to get out of the car, don’t have to identify themselves. Our purpose, our goal is to get Narcan into the hands of people,” said Wyoming County District Attorney Joe Peters.

According to the American Addiction Centers, Pennsylvania is one of the top ten states with the highest rate of overdose deaths.

“It’s about accountability we’re going to save your life. We want to get you into treatment not excuse the decision to use drugs but realize that we need to deal with it as a health issue and it would be unconscionable to watch someone die,” Peters explained.

Decreasing the amount of overdoses will help in more ways than one.

“At the same time that frees up the police and the prosecutors to focus on the drug trafficker and the predators,” Peters added.

With some seeing Narcan distributions as a way to promote drug use, D.A. Peters wants people to know that’s not the case.

“You never know a child a two-year-old can get into her mother’s prescription medicine a senior citizen might forget that he or she has taken their medication already and then take more,” Peters stated.

Each bag of Narcan that was handed out came with instructions on how to use it, and how to get help if you or someone you know struggles with an opioid addiction.

Narcan is good for a year and can be administered to people of all ages. If Narcan is used, immediately call 911 for assistance.
