The public can now comment on a draft set of rules for Maine’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave Program.

The rules came from the Maine Department of Labor and will be available for input from the public through July 8, according to a news release from the department Monday morning.

In 2023, the Legislature passed paid family and medical leave, which will give eligible public and private sector workers 12 weeks of paid time off available for family and medical reasons starting in 2026. That time could be used for reasons such as illness, caring for a relative or the birth of a child.

The proposed rules outline more specific details regarding who is eligible, what the leave can be used for and how to apply for family and medical leave.

Thoughts and feedback can be submitted online through the department’s website or mailed to 50 State House Station in Augusta with a postdate no later than July 8. The proposed rules are broken into 15 sections. Respondents may only comment on one section at a time if they use the online portal, but they may submit more than one comment if they wish to multiple sections.

The department is also holding an in-person listening session on the proposed rule at 9 a.m. on June 10 in the Frances Perkins Room at 45 Commerce Drive in Augusta. American Sign Language interpreters will be available. Those who may need other accommodations can reach out to the department at 207-623-7900.
