Dr. Anderson talks spring break, first grader cancer fundraiser
TOPEKA (KSNT) – USD 501 Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Anderson was on the 27 News morning show to discuss this upcoming spring break, reading across America and a fundraiser for a first grader with cancer.
27 News Morning Anchor David George asked Anderson about Whitson Elementary School and its fundraiser for a first grader with cancer.
“Whitson Elementary, hats off to them and to our first grader…” Anderson said. “Any time you can support the most vulnerable and celebrate young people and their achievements and their courageous battles they have, it’s a good thing.”
USD 501 will be on spring break next week. Anderson said while students aren’t around, district office staff will be in the office. Anderson said spring break will go through to Monday, March 18, with students back in the classroom on Tuesday; giving teachers time to prepare.
Anderson spoke about an upcoming exhibit from the Black Collective that will be around into May at the Topeka & Shawnee County Library. The exhibit talks about education before and after Brown v. Board.
“If you just want to learn about black history,” Anderson said. “Just go to this exhibit.”
“Thanks to the Black Collective, the library and all the folks who put that together,” Anderson said. “And yes, there were Robinson Middle curators under the stewardship of their teacher from Robinson Middle School.”
Anderson said students were at the capitol advocating with legislators and spoke on arts education. She said it is ‘Theater in our Schools Month’ and also ‘Fine Arts Month’.
“If you’re looking for a great play and you only want to spend $10 or so,” Anderson said. “Look at any of our high schools and attend one of their plays, they are national award-winning at many of our schools.”
