Dozens of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia found in Germany – National Police

Ukrainian and German law enforcement agencies have located and identified 161 Ukrainian children who were abducted by Russia and found in Germany, the Ukrinform news agency reported on April 17, citing Ukrainian National Police chief Ivan Vyhivskyi.

The location of the children, who were forcibly displaced to the temporarily occupied territories or to Russia and Belarus after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, was established as part of Kyiv’s efforts to document Russian war crimes, in particular the abduction of children.

"We are interested in joint actions with our German partners both on a bilateral basis and under the auspices of Europol," he said.

According to the Ukrainian state platform, Children of War, as of Jan. 2024, 19,546 children had been abducted or forcibly transferred to Russia.

On Jan. 14, 2024, Lubinets announced during the fourth meeting of the Peace Formula Advisors in Davos that Ukraine had repatriated 517 illegally abducted children and 2,828 adults from Russia, including 150 civilians.

On March 17, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants on March 17 for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Lvova-Belova for their involvement in the unlawful removal of children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation since Feb. 24, 2022.

On Feb. 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the exact number of Ukrainians, including children, adult civilians, and military personnel, in Russian custody is uncertain.
