Dozens of Houston County high school seniors receive $1,000 scholarships. See the list.

In anticipation of graduation day, 55 graduating seniors in Houston County will close out the school year with another milestone.

The Houston Association of Educational Office Professionals has awarded a total of $55,000 in scholarships to Houston County School District students, the organization announced Wednesday.

The students were chosen from 72 nominees across the district and received $1,000 to help pursue their higher education goals, Vice President Tijawanda Lowder said.

“This scholarship is so special because we do fundraisers over the course of the year (to fund it),” she said. “The teachers and staff pay $10 to wear jeans for a week. That money is all the revenue we received through the Jean Pass Fundraiser, and we give back to the students in our school system.”

After graduation, Northside High School student-athlete Kenneth Milton Jr. said the scholarship will help further his education at Georgia State University. The 18-year-old said he plans to major in anesthesiology.

“You could do a lot with $1,000” Milton said. “It’ll help cover books, housing and the resources that I need for school.”

The Houston Association of Educational Office Professionals award is Milton’s second scholarship offer this school year, said his mother, Tiffany Coney. As a single parent, Coney said it is critical that he receive as many scholarships as possible because everything is expensive.

“My main thing right now is getting him off to college and making sure that he has everything he needs,” Coney said. “We’re very excited to receive this scholarship.”

Lowder said the $55,000 distribution marks the largest stipend the group has ever given out in comparison to previous years. The checks were written out to the college the students were accepted into, she added.

The Houston Association of Educational Office Professionals is comprised of clerical staff across the school district. Its selection committee chose the recipients based on GPA, application responses and recommendation letters from teachers, according to the organization’s news release.
