Dozens of arrests and seized vehicles in South Florida’s ‘Wheels Up, Guns Down’

Miami-Dade authorities said they made 28 arrests and recovered 2 guns during an enforcement sting targeting riders of the “Wheels Up, Guns Down” event in South Florida.

Since the operation started Saturday, cops have also impounded 34 vehicles and issued 41 traffic citations as of Monday night.

The traditional event, which draws hundreds of riders on bikes and ATVs on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, began as a way to raise awareness of the killing of a Philadelphia biker in 2014. It has since morphed into a weekend-long cross-county rideout which authorities argue puts drivers and pedestrians at risk.

Of the arrests in Miami-Dade, 4 were misdemeanors, 11 were felonies, and the other 13 were traffic-related.

Over the weekend, Miami Herald news partner CBS 4 reported several crashes with riders on ATVs and dirt bikes that injured at least two police officers and caused other traffic accidents.
