HRT bus involved in Downtown Tunnel crash

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police (VSP) confirmed an HRT bus was involved in a crash in the eastbound lanes of I-264, in the Downtown Tunnel Wednesday morning.

According to state police, traffic came to a stop and the bus driver hit the breaks which caused the bus to veer to the right and hit the tunnel wall.

Four passengers on the bus were taken to Mary View and one was taken to Norfolk General with minor injuries.

It happened just before 9 a.m. and closed all eastbound lanes on I-264 causing major traffic delays. Drivers were rerouted to the Jordan Bridge.

We are working to learn how many people were hurt and the extent of their injuries.

VSP said the crash is still under investigation.

Eastbound lanes of traffic reopened around 10 a.m.
