How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Friday

Apple, the most valuable company in the U.S., slumped Friday, helping to drag down the stock market. A lack of progress in federal budget talks also discouraged investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 35.71 points, or 0.3 percent, to 13,135.01.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.87 points, 0.4 percent, to 1,413.58.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 20.83 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,971.33.

For the week:

The Dow is down 20.12 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P is down 4.49 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 6.71 points, or 0.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 917.45 points, or 7.5 percent.

The S&P is up 155.98 points, or 12.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 366.18 points, or 14.1 percent.
