The Dow Jones industrial average rose Friday after the government reported that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed sharply in December. The S&P 500 was also boosted by strong earnings reports and closed at its highest in five years.

The Dow closed up 48.92 points, or 0.4 percent, at 13,992.97.

The S&P 500 rose 8.54, or 0.6 percent, to 1,517.93.

The Nasdaq composite gained 28.74, or 0.9 percent, to 3,193.87.

For the week:

The Dow is down 16.82 points, or 0.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 4.76 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 14.77 points, or 0.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 888.83 points, or 6.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 91.74 points, or 6.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 174.36 points, or 5.8 percent.
