In a letter, Cartwright — who has been superintendent since 2021 — called holding the position a final professional goal in her 34-year career.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve in each and every role and capacity in which I have served as a lifelong learner, lifelong advocate for students, and lifelong advocate for public education over those decades,” Cartwright wrote. “It is now time for me to shift to the next chapter of my life.”

She has provided her 90-day notice and expects to retire around August 9, and has pledged to assist in hiring and training a successor.

Her retirement comes shortly after a controversial move by the school board to hire the Independence Law Center to work on unspecified policies.
